Michael Zerang, Feb 25 at 7pm Sudden Impact at Hairpin

AIRMW presents the Sudden Impact Series
Tatsu Aoki brings together a new series to facilitate catalyst events, providing a substratum for Chicago’s musical artists to explore and musically experiment. Michael Zerang was born in Chicago, Illinois, and is a first-generation American of Assyrian decent. He has been a professional musician, composer, and producer since 1976, focusing extensively on improvised music, free jazz, contemporary composition, puppet theater, experimental theater, and international musical forms.
As a percussionist, composer and collaborator, Zerang has over one hundred titles in his discography and has toured nationally and internationally to 35 countries since 1981, and worked with and ever-widening pool of collaborators, primarily in The United States, Western and Eastern Europe.

Beginning in 2004, Zerang began to work with musicians and artists living in the Middle East. He traveled to perform, hold workshops, and study, to Yemen, Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Morocco.

Michael has taught as a guest artist at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in performance technique, sound design, and sound/music as it relates to puppetry; rhythmic analysis for dancers at The Dance Center of Columbia College, Northwestern University, and MoMing Dance and Arts Center; courses in Composer/Choreographer Collaborations at Northwestern University; music to children at The Jane Adams Hull House.

Michael currently tours and holds workshops in improvisational music and percussion technique, and teaches private lessons in rhythmic analysis, music composition, and percussion technique.

Tatsu Aoki brings together a new series to facilitate catalyst events, providing a substratum for Chicago’s musical artists to explore and musically experiment.

AIRMW and Hairpin Arts Center welcomes Coco Elysses as the March Sudden Impact musical guest.

Coco Elysses, a modern day renaissance woman hails from Robbins, Illinois and is a producer, musician, actress, voice-over artist, screenwriter and poet. She is the second woman Chair of the 56 year old venerable AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians). During their second season, she was a featured musician in the critically claimed FOX drama Empire.

“Performance in Progress” showcases dance and spoken word by B’Rael Ali Thunder; Mars Caulton’s “Seven Sashes” performance with spoken word, voice + recorded music; storytelling by Jae Green and comedian Andy Meholick; a spoken word/music experience by Kao Ra Zen; as well as readings by Alex Wells Shapiro and Stasa Wade. ART-OFF! a live art + slaps event

Art-Off is an art extravaganza featuring live painting, slaps making tables, and artmaking for the public during AnySquared’s LIP 20/20 Exhibit & Arts Festival! Live painters will have 2.5 hours to complete their art, the audience votes on 3 winners, and the top 3 artists win cool prizes.

Our slaps making table is open to all, and the slap that gets the most votes also wins a prize. Artists include: Mario Mena, Squeak Starzula, Akeem, Joos, Delisha, Natalia Sustaita, Natalia Virafuentes, Tekisha Silver, Jeff Pak, Mosher, Zach Bartz, Hailey Marie, Don, AND Alice Robeson. We have a limited number of open sign-up spots for the the live-art contest! Arrive early to get those extra spots!
